The current total subscriber base of the popular World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role-playing game has now exceeded 12 million players, developer Blizzard announced today. The milestone was reached after the recent launch of the game's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, in China.
"The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.
World of Warcraft first launched in North America on November 23, 2004 with several expansion add-ons being released for the game since. The newest expansion, Cataclysm, launches on December 7, 2010.
Blizzard has my respect. They are the definition of a company who gradually climbs to the top. They consistently produce quality product after quality product. A few years back I calculated the total revenue Blizzard made from WoW and all of its component. Needless to say, I was blown away. It's even larger now.
